North Olympic Salmon Coalition Chum Spawner Survey Training

It’s that time of the year again! Adult summer will soon return to Chimacum Creek to spawn, which means our annual summer chum spawner surveys will soon begin. Join NOSC in this community science effort to gather important data on salmon population trends. During spawner surveys, teams of volunteers walk different stretches of Chimacum Creek to count and record all live and dead fish. Surveys occur every Tuesday morning from late August to October. Volunteers meet up at the NOSC “Redd Shed” at Finnriver, then carpool or caravan to their survey site with their team. Depending on the stretch of the creek, surveys can be a moderate to highly strenuous activity and each survey takes 1-3 hours. Be prepared to wade through the water, climb over logs, and hike a short trail to access the creek. NOSC provides gear for spawner surveyors – including waders, boots, a walking stick, and a data kit. RSVP required. Attendance to Training is Mandatory for Participation!

Please email outreach@nosc.org if you have any questions or if you want to participate but can’t attend the training.
