The qatáy Weed Warriors are a new group of volunteers working to restore many large and small prairie remnants at Camas Prairie Golf Park, 1948 Blaine St, Port Townsend. Currently meeting at the park on third Saturdays of each month at 10:00 am (during winter months).
At this time the focus is digging invasive grasses and other weeds from the designated prairie restoration areas throughout the park, with an estimated total area of 16 acres. Next spring barren areas will be planted with native grasses, bulbs and other prairie plants known to grow in this location. Since the change of park management more than a year ago, many species of prairie plants have been emerging, in these areas, which were suppressed by prior frequent mowing.
The qatáy Weed Warriors are officially registered volunteers for the Friends of Camas Prairie Golf Park, the managing non-profit organization, and upon volunteers first work party you must register and sign a liability wavier to participate. Monthly logs of work hours are kept for the park, and reported monthly to the City Parks Department on restoration progress.
